writing phenomena under the perkins overpass
March 31, 2008
so after walking around and looking at many things….reflections, shadows, vibrations, ect. i have opted for the writings and pictures drawn under the overpass. I think these writings have the ability to alter emotion by instilling fear of providing security. With that in mind i would like to use these writing with the support of other materials to eliminate visual and cognitive obstructions between one side of the overpass and the other.this project reminds me…obviously…of design week and im trying to go back and look at the success of each project and create something new and differento for this particular site.

hey joako-
i do like your idea of investigating graffiti on the overpass and your video is very compelling. i sort of liked the 1st edition better for how it moved through the site more slowly instead of the fast cuts… i think that it would be very interesting to explore how the distribution/characterization of the tags changes throughout the space. i don’t know if you wan to make a diagram detailing their location over the space, but i think it could be cool. also, have you looked into the history and contemporary politics of graffiti art? like did certain styles originate with a certain intent? what do they say about space v. territory? identity? etc. that might inform the way you analyze the site as well. i know there was an exhibit not too long ago about graffiti in BR- “ill communication”- it’s something you could look into if you are interested…

also, i found an interesting page on graffiti glossary:

and another interesting website on graffiti:

(from the perspective of a gang context i think)
